This is the first time we’ve covered a mainline Star Wars project since The Last Jedi. Love or hate that movie, it divided audiences, and the follow-up, The Rise of Skywalker, left most audiences feeling cold in 2019. It’s been seven years since that film, and much has changed. Lucasfilm has spent most of its resources making TV series for Disney+ and, most recently, its own Jedi master, Kathleen Kennedy, stepped down.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is the 13th Star Wars movie and the first to be released since the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the beginning of the next slate of films in the franchise (the next being Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy). It’s not only got to win back old fans, but it’s also got to spark imagination and excitement among the next generation of filmgoers.
It’s a tall task for a film that is essentially an expensive made-for-TV movie. Do Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and baby Grogu have what it takes to win audiences back?
