The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle (OFCC) announced its 20th annual slate of award winners, naming Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another as Best Film of 2025. The film led the organization’s honors following a year marked by ambitious genre filmmaking, bold directorial visions, and a renewed emphasis on original, human-centered storytelling.
“2025 was an exceptional year for genre filmmaking from some of today’s most experimental studio directors,” said Caleb Masters, OFCC president. “Films like Ryan Coogler’s supernatural meditation on race in Sinners, Zach Cregger’s unnerving social thriller Weapons, Ari Aster’s neo-western response to the pandemic era Eddington, and Rian Johnson’s exploration of faith in his whodunnit Wake Up Dead Man demonstrate how sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and dark comedy remain vital tools for grappling with the defining issues of our time.
One Battle After Another and Sinners Sweep the Major Categories
“Our top film of 2025, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, is a shining example of cinema’s power to speak to the cultural moment, push the boundaries of visual storytelling, and deliver an action-packed theatrical experience.”
Daniel Bokemper, OFCC secretary-treasurer, emphasized the consistency and competition that defined the year’s voting. “In 2025, two sentiments rang loudest for our organization. First, Paul Thomas Anderson is long overdue for his flowers. And second, Ryan Coogler is destined to be a household name — if he isn’t already. We also saw an incredibly tight race for Best Actor between Leonardo DiCaprio and Ethan Hawke, as well as overwhelming acclaim for Amy Madigan’s surprise role in Zach Cregger’s Weapons.”
Bokemper added, “Our organization is rarely short of surprises and upsets when it comes to our annual awards. In 2025, however, most of us agreed that between One Battle After Another and Sinners, original, heartfelt, and undeniably human stories are what we should celebrate the most. And given the strong showings we saw for Marty Supreme, Weapons, Hamnet, Sentimental Value, and others, we still live in a time rife for authentic and imaginative filmmaking.”
The OFCC’s Top 10 list reflected the breadth of that creativity, blending studio filmmaking with international and independent voices, while honors across directing, performance, and technical categories highlighted a year of remarkable craft.
