The Cinematic Schematic is back for brains with our review of the first major release of 2026, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta.
Last summer, we gave 28 Years Later our highest recommendation across the table, praising the reunion of writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle for reinvigorating the franchise with bold new ideas to go alongside the zombie thrills. Starring Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, the first chapter of the new trilogy proved to be a high-water mark for modern zombie horror.
The Bone Temple picks up directly where the story left off, pushing Dr. Kelson (Fiennes) to the forefront as he confronts a demented and charismatic cult leader, Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). As Kelson studies an “alpha” infected known as Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), Crystal recruits Spike and unleashes violence across the U.K. countryside.
Meeting the high bar of the previous two films is a tall task, and DaCosta takes her best swing at Garland’s script, exploring ideas of science, faith, belief, and the cult of personality.
Does 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple deliver a worthy follow-up?
