A storm’s coming, listeners. No, this isn’t a reference to the three more Minions sequels. In the 200th episode of The Cinematic Schematic, hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman are joined by a panel of Oklahoma film critics from the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle to review Twisters.

Welcoming This Week’s Guest Stormchasers of the Century

No Film School’s Jo Light, KJYO-FM and Critic’s Choice member Jason Black, and The Oklahoman’s Brandy McDonnell join the show to render a verdict on the pseudo-sequel to the 1995 Twister.

Left to Right: Caleb Masters, Jason Black, Laron Chapman, Brandy McDonnell, and Jo Light.

Icebreaker Question: What’s your experience with the original 1996 film?

    Time Stamp: 5:10

To start our episode 200 festivities, we spend a little time reminiscing about the original 1996 Jan de Bont film starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, and an impressive supporting cast.

    • What was our initial impression of the film in the 90s?
    • How well has it aged?
    • Were we itching for a sequel?

    Spoiler-Free Review

    Time Stamp: 20:34

Twenty-eight years after the previous film, Twisters blew box office projections away, making 81.25 million dollars on its opening weekend. Given analysts initially expected $40-$50 million, it’s clear there was an appetite for a Glen Powell star-powered disaster movie in 2024.

Box office results aren’t everything, as the Michael Bay-directed Transformers franchise will attest.

The acclaimed Minari director, Lee Isaac Chung, hoped to bring a more sensitive touch to a major studio blockbuster. Do the director and cast members Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos have that summer popcorn magic?

    In our review, we’ll cover:

    • Our overall thoughts on Twisters
    • How well the film represented Oklahoma (and Oklahomans) on the big screen
    • Our letter-grade verdicts
    • Alternate media we’d recommend alongside Twisters

    Spoilers Discussion

    Time Stamp: 1:00:00

In our spoiler-filled discussion, we take a look at:

    • Did the ending work for us?
    • Does the success of Twisters signal the return of blockbusters from a bygone era?
    • Given the film’s box office hit status, will they get a sequel?

Has director Lee Isaac Chung tamed this summer blockbuster? Tune into the conversation for our verdicts.
