Oh yes. There will be blood on this episode of The Cinematic Schematic. Today we’re diving deep into Jane Schoenbrun’s new psychological horror comedy sexual thriller, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.

The film follows Hannah Einbinder as Kris Williams. She’s a filmmaker hired to reboot a series called “Camp Miasma” featuring an iconic killer named “Little Death” (Jack Haven). Williams decides to pitch the original “final girl,” Billy Presley(Gillian Anderson), on a series return. On her mission to recruit Presley, Williams confronts the truth behind her relationship to the franchise.

Jane Schoenbrun Is Exploring Identity, Millennial Nostalgia Differently

Schoenbrun has quickly established themselves as one of the more compelling cinematic voices of the 2020s by emphasizing how nostalgia, sex, and our relationship with media shape our identity. Part of their secret is making the stories hyperspecific.

Internet lore. 90s TV fandoms. 80s and 90s slasher films.

Schoenbrun has spent their decade making movies about familiar topics from a whole new angle. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021) gave us a glimpse into the impacts creepypasta horror and communal mythmaking had on young adults. I Saw the TV Glow was a major emotional hit with our crew in 2024—It even made a couple of our top films of the year lists. The film explored the liberation and escapism a TV show can provide to lonely, isolated people.

Their new movie may be their boldest film yet. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma more directly connects the journey from horror film fan to sexual fantasy and awakening, using satire by riffing on movies like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp.

It’s a bold and ambitious swing. Does this approach work with Camp Miasma?

Listen to the in-depth conversation for our verdicts, plus our take on a few of the film’s weightier ideas and genre-bending.

About Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

    IMDB describes the film as:

A director making a slasher sequel becomes obsessed with casting the original film’s ‘final girl,’ leading both women into psychological and sexual chaos.
