Raise the lights, turn on the music, and prepare yourself for the king of pop—or at least a version of him—in The Cinematic Schematic review of Michael.

Michael Jackson is one of the most prominent celebrities of the twentieth century. He’s credited with transforming modern music and entertainment through innovative sound, turning music videos into cinematic events, and popularizing dance moves like the moonwalk. After rising to fame with the Jackson 5 as a child, he launched a groundbreaking solo career that produced some of the best-selling albums of all time, including Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous. He won 13 Grammy Awards and, most notably, broke racial barriers on platforms like MTV.

Unfortunately, the latter half of his life was also plagued by controversies, including drug abuse, accusations of sexual abuse, and financial woes.

After years of development, the King of Pop’s legacy is finally getting the big screen treatment in a film written by John Logan (Gladiator, Skyfall) and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer). After multiple production delays and legal complications related to one of Jackson’s accusers, the entire film was re-shot, removing the story surrounding the later years of the musician’s life. The film has arrived on the big screen and has been a raging box office success.

Not everyone has welcomed MJ’s story on the big screen. Critics have not been thrilled with this version of the complicated pop star, with a current Rotten Tomatoes consensus of 38% positive. What’s the source of the divide?

    Meet The Band

In this week’s episode, hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman break down the film and the discourse surrounding it to render a verdict on the second biggest box office opening of 2026. What does Michael get right, wrong, or leave out entirely?
