The tinfoil hats are on, and the sentimentality has never been higher. In this episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we review Steven Spielberg’s fifth movie about aliens, Disclosure Day.

From Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial(1982) and War of the Worlds (2005), the legendary filmmaker has remained steadfast in his fascination with beings from other planets coming to Earth. Disclosure Day is his latest (and likely final) statement in this lifelong curiosity. How would humanity react if the presence of aliens were actually announced on a telecast? With UAP-related documents being declassified by the government with some regularity, Spielberg believes this is a question essential to the future of humanity. Does this core idea make for a compelling idea in the hands of writer David Koepp?

Disclosure Day is also one of the big-screen outings by one of the greatest living filmmakers at the end of his career, and audiences have been showing up. The film stars Emily Blunt as Margaret Fairchild, Josh O’ Connor as Dr. Daniel Kellner, Colin Firth as Noah Scanlon, Eve Hewson as Jane Blankenship, and Colman Domingo as Hugo Wakefield.

It’s Spielberg’s biggest, completely original film to date. It opened #1 at the U.S. box office on its opening weekend. Despite the initial interest, the film has been hugely divisive online, with many filmgoers accusing the director of being out of touch.

Does Spielberg really have anything new to say in 2026? Tune in to the full conversation for our spoiler-free verdicts, followed by a spoiler-filled discussion.
