The Cinematic Schematic concludes our coverage of the year that was with a countdown of The Cinematropolis’s top 5 movies of 2025.

Hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman are rejoined by GoodTrash Media and Oklahoma Film Exchange co-founder Dalton Stuart to continue the annual tradition of looking back at last year.

The Top News Story of 2025

For better or worse (oftentimes worse), 2025 was a consequential year at the multiplex. Box office numbers were stagnant, mergers and acquisitions ravaged a volatile Hollywood, and Gen Z is now the biggest driver of business.

Each host picks their top story of 2025. A few of the year’s most notable stories include:

    1. Warner Bros For Sale (Again), Netflix submits bid
    2. Kpop Demon Hunters Lights Up Netflix, and then the box office
    3. Disney invests $1 billion in OpenAI
    4. Layoffs, Layoffs, Layoffs
    5. The Streaming Wars come to an end?
    6. James Cameron appears to be doing it again (at the box office)
    7. DC Finally Beats Marvel at their own game with Superman (at the box office)
    8. Original horror breaks through during awards season (Sinners, Weapons, 28 Years Later)

    2025 Honorary Awards

Our honorary awards, often bestowed for dubious honors, return to commemorate the year in movies.

    This year’s awards include:

    • SPECIAL AWARD 1: The “This Could Only Be Made in 2024” Award
    • SPECIAL AWARD 2: The “Doc Brown ‘What Year Is It?’ Award” for a movie that feels like it will age well.
    • SPECIAL AWARD 3(in loving memory of Filmspotting SVU): The “Movie I Didn’t Get” Award
    • SPECIAL AWARD 4: The “Movie They Didn’t Get” Award
    • SPECIAL AWARD 5: The Brian O Conner (formerly Dom Torretto)  “Movie You’re Most Likely to Watch With Your Family” Award.
    • SPECIAL AWARD 6: The “Movie You’re Least Likely to Watch With or Recommend to Your Parents” Award.
    • SPECIAL AWARD 7: The “Movie You Wish You’d Seen on the Big Screen” Award
    • SPECIAL AWARD 8: The “Biggest Disappointment of 2024” Award
    • SPECIAL AWARD 9: The “Babu Frick Memorial” Award
