The Cinematic Schematic is on a mission to save the internet from toxic takes that are cooling the interest in space exploration. This week, we’re diving deep into the first blockbuster of 2026, Project Hail Mary.
It’s been a few years since we’ve seen mankind embark on an impossible mission to save humanity. After being largely MIA in the post-COVID era, Project Hail Mary is here to remind audiences that space exploration still represents the greatest achievement of our species.
Project Hail Mary is based on a 2021 novel by science fiction author Andy Weir. A film adaptation of Weir’s last novel, The Martian, was directed by Ridley Scott, written by Drew Goddard, and starred Matt Damon in 2015.
The world is different in 2026. There’s been a waning government interest in NASA, and the outlook on the future is largely more cynical.
Luckily, Amazon MGM recruited one of the most acclaimed comedy duos, Phil Lord and Chris Miller(The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), to direct another script from Drew Goddard. With the largely beloved pair behind the camera and Ryan Gosling starring as Ryalund Grace, the stars seem aligned for a fresh wave of sci-fi optimism for the 2020s.
Does Project Hail Mary live up to the acclaim?
Listen to the full conversation for our verdicts on one of 2026’s biggest hits.
