In today’s episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we’re thwipping right past the string of mediocre MCU and DCEU movies of recent years to talk about one of the most anticipated and buzzed-about animated films of the year, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Longtime listeners may recall we loved 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, going so far as to consider it the best in the series. Five years later, the sentiment amongst critics and fans remains strong, with Rotten Tomatoes listing it as 97% fresh amongst critics and a 94% audience score. That’s not to mention the Best Animated Feature Oscar it took home at the 2019 ceremony.

Praised for its fresh and innovative animation and heartfelt story of Miles Morales, people loved it.

Is it possible to capture lightning in a bottle twice?

Rejoining hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman to answer this question are comic book scholar and semi-retired podcaster Joshua Unruh and Geek Girl Features writer Chelsea Ratterman.

We start the conversation by ranking our top three Spider-Man feature films before discussing our favorite franchise foes. We then jump into a short spoiler-free review of the film before wrapping up the conversation with an extra in-depth spoiler-filled analysis discussion.

The main topic of the spoiler talk–what makes a good cliffhanger? And more importantly, does Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse successfully pull it off?

Tune in for our full verdicts!
