We’re going up, up and away to stand up for truth, justice…and whatever else Superman stands for offworld. In this episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we review James Gunn’s DCU sophomore feature, Supergirl.

Last year’s Superman launched Gunn’s new cinematic universe to largely positive acclaim. We were all pretty high on the latest interpretation of The Last Son of Krypton, played by David Corenswet. The hit film grossed $624.3 million worldwide and received an A- CinemaScore. Milly Alcock even made a cameo as Kara Zor-el (AKA Supergirl) herself.

Supergirl has been a different story.

The film stars Alcock in the titular role, Jason Momoa as Lobo (in one of the first major DCEU/DCU crossover stars), Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll,  David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Corenswet as Clark Kent, AKA Superman. It’s based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely.

Despite the positive momentum coming from Superman, the new film has struggled to find an audience. It received middling reviews from critics, opened to an underwhelming $37 million in its debut weekend, and earned a B- CinemaScore from audiences.

Is the film really that bad, or is the online discourse simply dogpiling on one of the first major underperformers of the summer?

Tune into the conversation to hear where this panel lands. We go through an in-depth spoiler discussion talking about the state of superhero movies, and whatever the next “it” thing might be.
