In 2016, Planet Thunder Productions made a splash at the deadCenter Film Festival with their independently crowdsourced sci-fi feature film Electric Nostalgia. The cerebral black-and-white horror film sold out two theaters and took home Best Oklahoma Narrative Feature. The Okie success became an inspiration for burgeoning filmmakers seeking to explore high concept, and a challenge for more experienced filmmakers working on a limited budget. Looking “good for an indie Oklahoma film” was no longer an acceptable standard.
The film returns to the festival for its 10th anniversary this Sunday at 3:45 PM in the Rodeo Cinema Stockyards theater.
Electric Nostalgia Put a Rocket on Planet Thunder Productions
Electric Nostalgia was the second feature from Planet Thunder Productions, an Oklahoma-based company founded by Jacob Leighton Burns, Zachary Burns, and Vinnie Hogan. Their first film was the 2013 supernatural musical comedy, The Fable of Shannon Cable, directed by Hogan. Electric Nostalgia was Jacob’s debut film, and it takes a decidedly darker direction. The story follows a woman named Alexis (Lauren Analla) who wakes up in a body different from her own after an accident. She begins to confide in her employer, Leland Hem(Stephen Goodman), after she begins hallucinating and having dreams of her past life.
The film was the most buzzed-about local production in OKC a decade ago. In fact, host Caleb Masters interviewed the Nostalgia Pal gang at the festival over at GoodTrash Media.
Remembering the Legacy 10 Years Later
Since the wave of success in 2016, Planet Thunder Productions has continued to receive acclaim and sell out theaters at festivals across the country. Jacob Burns has gone on to make another sci-fi horror, Shifter; Zachary Burns debuted his dark screwball comedy, Hell Hath No Fury, and Hogan recently released a sci-fi feature of his own, The Distant Jump.
In this special 2026 deadCenter Film Festival, The Cinematic Schematic reunites several members of the cast, including Goodman, Page Tudyk Gomez, J. Alan Davidson, Clinton Joseph, and the Burns brothers, ahead of the Electric Nostalgia 10th Anniversary screening.
